Psalm 91 May 20, 2020

Pastor Bruce Hedgepeth

Psalm 91 Covered

Wanted to write down some reflections from this Psalm that I've been praying and learning during the Coved 19 pandemic, asking the Lord to take away this scourge from the earth.

This is a psalm that invokes lots of different imagery: birds and battle are two that stand out to me-especially in the first half of the psalm.

It begins with affirmation that in the Lord, we are covered; we are protected, we find shelter & we rest in God's shadow.

The Lord covers us with strong flying feathers and provides refuge under his wings-from deadly snares and from pestilence (I'm thinking Covid 19 when I read that.)

Then imagery shifts to battle-the Lord is our shield to protect us from flying arrows of evil and our fighting shield from close up struggles.

This is imagery for pushing forward under God's cover, not for retreating or resting in camp. There will casualties, but as we advance under God's cover, we will look and see the destruction of evil. Lord destroy the Corona virus for your glory and honor, and for the sake of your people's suffering.
