John 20:19-31 Peace

Two early post-resurrection appearances by Jesus to his disciples in John's account of events.

In the first instance, John tells us that the disciples who gathered locked themselves in the room for fear of Jewish leaders. It was a time in which Jesus' followers felt threat and danger.

Then the resurrected Christ simply appeared in the room and spoke peace to them twice. So in the setting of the disciples feeling in danger and under threat the first word that Jesus says is peace.

In the second instance, we learn that Thomas had been with the disciples at first, so he said that he wouldn't believe the Lord was raised until he saw and touched for himself. Jesus appeared and again spoke peace to all the disciples and invited Thomas to touch his hands and side-addressing his doubt.

Lord, speak peace to me. I need it today. I need your peace everyday. Speak peace to us. We need your peace in these times of pandemic and economic stress and confusion and threat and danger. Speak peace to us, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen
