John 10:1-10 June 4, 2020

John 10:1-10 Voice

Beginning of Jesus parables, about sheep, shepherds, gates, pens, and related ideas. In these first ten verses, he probably uses the word gate most repeatedly-even saying "I am the gate...."

But, the word that most captures my attention is the way Jesus talks about the sheep recognizing the voice of the shepherd. Because it is a familiar voice-one that means care, protection, guidance, and provision.

In contrast, the sheep run from the voice of a stranger because it is unfamiliar, because the sheep don't have any positive association to that stranger's voice.

Lord, in these times that I spend in your word, tune my ear to hear and recognize your voice. In the living of life and reflecting on the past, help me to hear and remember how your voice has guided me and guarded me and spoken peace and wisdom and truth to me.

Let me run from the voice of the stranger-the thief and bandit, who comes only to bring death and destruction.

Let me hear and respond to your voice today and every day.
