Acts 2:42-47 Devoted

This is one of my favorite passages as it gives such a positive, exciting, growing picture of what the early church was actually like, It inspires for what a community can be-even in our times.

While these verse are very familiar, the way the text was laid out to begin in verse 42 made the word "devoted" stand out for me in a new way.

Just after Luke tells us that 3000 people trusted Jesus as Messiah after Peter's Pentecost sermon, then the text describes how "they devoted themselves to the Apostles' teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread and the prayers."

It's the named practices to which these early believers devoted themselves that grabs me: the apostles teaching: fellowship: breaking bread; prayer.

What would it mean for me, for us, to truly be devoted to apostolic teaching, to real lift-on-life fellowship to breaking bread together-at meals and communion, and to prayer?

O Lord, teach me that devotion and let me live generously, relationally, faithfully, winsomely, and evangelically as they did in the early church. Grow your kingdom here, Lord.
